Passengers with reduced mobility

Passengers with reduced mobility The Regulation on the rights of persons with reduced mobility when using air transport prohibits operators from refusing reservation or boarding to persons because of their disability. There are certain exceptions and derogations, however, particularly for justified safety reasons:

  • Ability of the handling agent to provide such types of services (essential equipment, staff properly trained);
  • Limitations (for safety reasons, airlines limit the number of people with reduced mobility on board (from 3-5 people, depending on flight duration and the company)). It is important to notify about the disability before boarding and if it will be necessary a person must accompany to the boarding gate;
  • Availability of equipment on board for people with reduced mobility;
  • Due to security regulations, passengers with reduced mobility are restricted in defined rows (e.g. emergency exits);
  • People with reduced mobility should consult the opinion of a doctor regarding the ability to travel.

To ensure that you have a pleasant flight, please inform in advance about any disability or need for assistance at the airport and/or on board of the aircraft when you book your ticket or within 72 hours before the flight. The airlines may require health medical data of passenger; a special form must be filled by the treating physician.

Some of the airlines allow carriage of your own wheelchair free of charge. If it’s size and weight are not admitted it will be charged as a regular baggage. For more information about airline regulations regarding persons with reduced mobility is recommended to call to Airline Customer Service.
